Position Overview:

The Social Mobilizer (SM) is the primary point of contact for girls in the Girls’ Education Program. She facilitates life skills sessions for the girls and provides mentoring to them in the form of group and individual meetings, as well as with home visits. The Social Mobilizer works with parents/caretakers and community members to educate them about the importance of girls’ education by facilitating parent workshops and/or holding community events. The majority of her time is spent with the girls at their schools. This position reports to the Girls’ Education Program Associate, and frequently collaborates with the Program Officer. The Social Mobilizer has no direct reports.

Roles & Responsibilities:

Program Planning, Implementation and Training:

  • Organize and facilitate Room to Read’s life skills sessions with girls and support them to use such skills in their lives.
  • Serve as a positive role model and mentor to girls by facilitating monthly group mentoring discussions.
  • Identify girls at risk of dropping or failing out of school using Room to Read’s risk and response system. Prioritize such at-risk girls for individual mentoring and follow-up support in the form of individual conversations and home visits, as needed.
  • Organize and facilitate Room to Read’s parent workshop sessions with parents/caregivers of girls to discuss specific topics related to girls’ education.
  • Conduct an introductory home visit with parents/caregivers of all new girls enrolled in the Girls’ Education Program.
  • Collaborate closely with the Program Officer and Program Associate to conduct one community-wide awareness event each year to mobilize support for girls’ education and gender equality.
  • Collaborate regularly with school authorities and communities to ensure local support for program implementation.
  • Collaborate closely with the Program Officer and Program Associate to conduct meet-up activities for Girls’ Education Program alumnae, as needed.
  • Participate in module trainings on Girls’ Education Program content and activities. These trainings will be led by the Program Officer and/or GEP Manager.
  • Support the Program Associate in the process of material support assessment and distribution for selected girls, as needed
  • Collaborate with other Social Mobilizers to conduct program activities as assigned by the Program Associate.
  • Participate in weekly 1-on-1 meetings with direct supervisor and other regular coaching/capacity building discussions, as needed.
  • Participate in regular trainings and meetings with Room to Read staff, as planned.
  • Participate in any other activities that may be required to be undertaken to fulfill the objectives of the organization.

Monitoring, Reporting and Documentation:

  • Participate in monthly SM review meetings to discuss technical program implementation challenges and best practices with the Program Officer and other SMs.
  • Monitor and keep written records of girls including school attendance, academic performance, and participation in program activities. Work closely with the School Focal Point (main contact person at the school) to regularly obtain this data as needed. Provide this data to the Program Associate/Assistant when requested.
  • Assist the Program Associate/Assistant with regular collection of Girls’ Education Program alumnae data, including conducting alumnae information surveys, as needed.
  • Assist the Program Associate and/or Program Officer in conducting life skills assessments of Girls’ Education Program participants, as needed.
  • Prepare and submit regular reports to the Program Officer and Program Associate, as needed
  • Track and submit all program activity expenses and invoices.
  • Participate in donor site visits and provide information to donors about Room to Read’s Girls’ Education Program, as requested.
  • Document best practices, case studies, and lessons learned and share with the GEP Program Officer.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor Degree in education/social sciences or equivalent/or higher.
  • Minimum 2 years of relevant work experience.
  • Demonstrated experience and/or interest working with and or counselling adolescent girls.
  • Good interpersonal skills and a team player.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills including the ability to monitor progress of program implementation.
  • Ability to juggle multiple priorities simultaneously and take initiative.
  • Prior success working closely and building relationships with diverse groups of people.
  • Desire and ability to spend a significant majority of time traveling and providing direct support to girls at the school, community, or home.
  • Fluency in language spoken by girls.
  • Familiarity or experience with gender issues, girls’ education and/or community development preferred.
  • Female candidates strongly preferred.
