The Individual and Major Gifts Program complements the Institutional Funding Program and sits within the Development Service Node. This role will review and implement recommendations to re-imagine individual giving at Ipas.

The Director of Individual Giving will work independently and is responsible for designing and implementing an effective and successful strategy to increase individual and major donors’ giving (including planned giving), and to support all campaigns to raise resources for the Ipas mission. This role will focus on current donors and also work with prospects to secure new donors. This individual will lead a US team of qualified and enthusiastic individual and major gift fundraisers to secure philanthropic/financial resources.

Responsibilities include increasing Ipas’s unrestricted funding by building and managing a dynamic portfolio of high net worth US donors, including obtaining, retaining, and upgrading donors over time. The Director will oversee the development of clear, evocative messaging and publications (online and in print) that provide donors and donor prospects with compelling reasons to support Ipas’s mission.

S/he will provide strategic advice to board members and senior leadership and function as the liaison for the Major Gifts Committee and the Ipas US board. The Director will ensure that appropriate and clear policies are in place to guide gift acceptance and other aspects of the Individual and Major Gifts Program (IMG).

The Director is expected to maintain a travel schedule of personal visits with donors and initiate one on one engagement and solicitation opportunities with donors and new prospects.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Fundraising:

The Director of Individual Giving will be responsible for managing a fluid and active portfolio of donors and prospects (capable of giving $100,000 or more annually) through the five stages of giving: identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship, as appropriate to each group, perpetually seeking new prospects and donors. This includes ensuring all contact reports are entered in the database for effective relationship management.

Portfolio Size: approximately 30 high net worth individuals/households

Donor Cultivation and Relationship Building:

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with existing donors and potential supporters through face-to-face meetings, events, and presentations.
  • Utilize data and insights to customize fundraising approaches, tailoring proposals and presentations to align with the interests and priorities of prospective donors.
  • With high-capacity hosts, coordinate all aspects of prospecting and cultivation events.
  • Support community building strategies that include in-person events, virtual events, conferences, and 1:1 meetings in order to foster meaningful relationships and introduce Ipas.

Strategic Fundraising and Campaign Execution:

  • Lead IMG team members to create and implement comprehensive fundraising strategies and tactics that align with the organization's objectives.
  • Coordinates and/or attends events for identifying prospects and qualifying donors.
  • Develop campaigns, goals, activities, and themes for special events and occasions, engaging consultants as necessary.
  • Ensure that the Individual and Major Gifts Team is current and ahead of successful fundraising trends, modifying as relevant to the strategic plan.

Program Management:

  • Engage Ipas’s President & CEO, Director of Development, and IMG Committee Members in the most leveraged and strategic manner for fundraising effectiveness.
  • Lead in goal setting, benchmarking, and integrating with current fundraising and communications efforts.
  • Report the IMG team's progress towards quarterly network Resource Mobilization Dashboard semi-annual report for inclusion in network reports.
  • Report to the Development Director regularly on developments and opportunities in the Individual and Major Gifts portfolio.
  • Lead fundraising training for staff, board, and other Major Gifts volunteers.
  • Engage in regular opportunities for cross-unit collaboration between other departments and the IMG team.
  • Ensure that policies and procedures related to Individual and Major Gifts are current and known by relevant staff and board members.
  • Ensure all members of the IMG team have an appropriate professional development program and lead training for other Ipas team members (senior staff, country directors and board members) for fundraising meetings and events.

Program Administration:

  • Supervise, coach, set goals, and evaluate Individual and Major Gifts staff.
  • Contribute to unit planning and budgeting in accordance with the Ipas Management Cycle.
  • Completes internal spend authorizations and expense reports for travel in a timely fashion.

Board Relations:

  • Act as primary liaison between members of the Major Gifts Committee and Ipas Board members.
  • Prepare agendas and reports to increase board fundraising education, participation, and ambassadorship.

Communications:

  • Collaborate with the Communications Department and Communications Service Providers to ensure that the website and social media presence support philanthropic engagement.
  • Lead Ipas in revision of philanthropic case for support and other collateral materials.

General Duties:

  • Active Citizen of the Ipas Network- support healthy functioning of the Network through assigned tasks and proactive, transparent information sharing.
  • Through engagement with cross-functional teams, external partners, and donors serves as a valued partner representing the Development Department.
  • Any other duties needed to help drive our vision, fulfill our mission, and abide by our organization’s values.

REQUIREMENTS

Minimum:

  • Passionate commitment to Ipas’s mission and knowledge of the reproductive health environment.
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • 10+ years' experience and demonstrated success cultivating and soliciting major gifts.
  • 5-10 years of managing a program or department and supervision experience.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, oral and written communication skills with demonstrated experience developing successful fundraising campaigns and related messaging.
  • Excellent organizational, project management, and time management skills.
  • Strong skill base in training staff and volunteer leadership teams.
  • Able to work independently and take full ownership of assignments.
  • Excellent collaborator and team member, able to work well with individuals at all levels of the organization.
  • Knowledge of prospect tracking systems and donor databases.
  • Ability to travel 30% or more as needed.
  • Experience working in a non-profit organization.

Preferred:

  • Master’s Degree in a relevant field.
  • CFRE or ACFRE credential preferred.
  • International experience.
