The position is located in the Economy Division, Energy and Climate Branch, Cities Unit, Paris duty station.

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Food Systems, Programme Officer, Cities Unit, the incumbent will:

  • Implement in collaboration with FAO the Core Initiative on Food Loss and Waste of the 10YFP SFS Programme, including the implementation and management of the Think Eat Save campaign in cooperation with the Communications Division, and coordination of the regional capacity building and Think Eat Save Guidance pilot programmes, in collaboration with governments, external stakeholders and the Regional Offices:
    • Hold regular meetings and instigate communication between UN Environment and FAO and other stakeholders in implementing the Core Initiative on Food Loss and Waste.
    • Develop work plans and project proposals to increase UN Environment’s impact on food waste prevention and reduction especially around country and city level activities, communication and capacity building.
    • Develop and manage related activities and partnerships, including with private sector, local governments and civil society/consumer organisations.
    • Work closely with the Communications Division in ensuring accuracy and effectiveness of messaging.
    • Develop and implement evidence-based research on food waste prevention and reduction.
    • Undertaking outreach and ongoing support activities; participating and presenting in various conferences to promote food waste prevention and reduction.
    • Preparing various written outputs, eg. draft background papers, policy and advocacy papers, comments on concept notes, implementation plans.
  • Be the focal point for UN Environment's efforts to deliver SDG Target 12.3. In collaboration with key international stakeholders, coordinate reporting against the Target using the Food Loss and Waste Protocol, designing and implementing a plan to measure progress across public and private sectors:
    • Work with Science Division in developing with FAO and the Champions 12.3 a coherent plan to report against the SDG target 12.3.
    • Support UN Environment’s Executive Director as Co-Chair of Champions 12.3. by providing briefings, people stories and other materials as needed.
  • Contribute food waste elements to the promotion of SCP in the food and agriculture sector though the development of activities on sustainable food systems design and implementation. The PMO will also contribute to the development of activities on sustainable diets and sustainable food consumption, in the context of sustainable food systems, ensuring linkages with sustainable lifestyles work:
    • Contributing to UN Environment’s efforts to effect a transition to more sustainable foods by ensuring that food waste elements are included in large scale project and activity design.
    • Coordination of the Unit’s wider work in the area of sustainable food systems and food waste, as emerging from the Unit’s activities in this area.
    • Contributing to the activities on sustainable lifestyles, as emerging from the Division/UN Environment wide work in this area.
    • Contributing to the activities related to cooperation with other international and inter-governmental organizations in joint activities related to sustainable food systems, as well as to activities such as proposal development.
  • Support activities on outreach, communication and information request; including:
    • Undertaking outreach activities related to Unit’s broader activities including the planning of facilitating workshops and developing project proposals.
    • Developing linkages between the Unit’s work streams and activities undertaken by other division areas such as Ecosystems and Communication division.
    • Supporting development of related Unit publications ensuring that communication products are in line with UN Environment guidelines and preparing briefings.
  • Provide relevant support for the effective and integrated implementation of the Unit’s other activities under the work area of cities.
  • Undertake any additional tasks as and when it is required by the Head of the Unit and Chief of the Branch.

Education

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in a field related to policy and environmental sciences, social sciences or sustainable development. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience at the international level in food waste prevention and reduction. Demonstration of in-depth understanding of the causes, environmental impacts, and policy context for food waste reduction, experience building multi-stakeholder partnerships and extensive global network on food waste is desirable. Prior experience or knowledge of the UN system is advantageous.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the advertised post, excellent command of oral and written English is required. Knowledge of other UN official languages an asset.
