The Director is the senior team coordinator for programs related to Winrock's Forestry & Natural Resource Management (FNRM) portfolio within the Clean Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) Group. FNRM is largely focused on proposing, winning, and implementing large international development projects focused on natural resource management.

The Director is the senior team leader for programs related to Winrock's Forestry & Natural Resource Management (FNRM) portfolio within the Clean Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) Group.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Direct planning, implementation and expansion of programs in FNRM on day-to-day basis. Ensure ongoing programmatic excellence and consistent quality of administration of the unit;
  • Exceptional ability to analyze and identify problems, define obstacles and solution options, create consensus on course of action and utilize results to improve future analysis;
  • Provide inspirational leadership and direction to all FNRM staff, including supporting their mentoring and personal development, and promote a culture that reflects Winrock’s mission to empower the disadvantaged, increase economic opportunity and sustain natural resources;
  • Lead in identifying, developing, tracking and securing new business in natural resource management. This requires taking an integrated approach to develop projects that may touch across diverse areas including forest management, watershed and water resource management, management of other ecosystem services, climate smart agriculture, policy, governance, private sector engagement and finance;
  • Work effectively with other units within CEEW and Winrock to leverage expertise and help grow FNRM and CEEW;
  • Prepare and implement annual team strategy and business plans; recommend timelines and resources needed to achieve unit’s strategic goals;
  • Prepare and effectively manage annual internal and project budgets;
  • Assure timely, results-oriented, and successful implementation of all Winrock FNRM projects and activities;
  • Manage, provide annual evaluations for, and support FNRM staff to consistently perform at a high level;
  • Cooperate effectively and extensively with other units in CEEW and Winrock, in managing the FNRM portfolio, creating and sharing knowledge management products, and developing new business proposals;
  • Nurture a network of experts and organizations to collaborate with, and strengthen, FNRM’s, CEEW’s and Winrock’s work;
  • Connect Winrock with the ideas and initiatives of others and develop strategic partnerships to increase Winrock’s visibility in FNRM and expand the FNRM and CEEW portfolio;
  • Manage existing client and donor relationships, engaging new relationships with partners, donors, and clients beyond current portfolio.

Education

  • Advanced degree in Forestry, Natural Resources, Environment, International Development, Business, Finance or other relevant field.

Experience

  • At least fifteen years demonstrated experience in forestry, natural resource management and economic development, with progressively more responsibility over time;
  • Management experience in international project development and implementation, including budget and staff management, and strategic planning, is required;
  • Must have experience with international donor agencies, including USAID, and ideally MCC, DFID, ADB, and the World Bank;
  • Must have established networks with organizations and clients involved in FNRM initiatives;
  • International experience, including long-term experience working and living in a developing country, is strongly preferred;
  • Private sector experience preferred;
  • Home office experience, including managing a complex portfolio of projects from a US-based headquarters, is require;
  • Experience managing innovative proposal teams, and a winning track record;
  • Demonstrated ability to hire, train and mentor staff, create and manage budgets, and cooperate effectively with other units.

  • Strong project management skills managing complex, multifaceted projects resulting in measurable successes and program growth;
  • Skilled at securing new business, especially with USAID but including other funders, including leading outreach to existing and new business clients; generating, qualifying and establishing new business leads; and, seeking and securing new business opportunities. Must provide evidence of success in developing new work areas or topics, and presenting them in successful proposals, especially to USAID;
  • Unwavering commitment to deliver quality programs and projects. Strong project monitoring and evaluation skills and experience required;
  • Ability to identify and resolve key issues with FNRM project implementation, including working effectively with senior staff including project Chiefs of Party, and host governments;
  • Excellence in organizational management with the ability to coach staff, manage, and develop high-performance teams, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills;
  • Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people. Demonstrated staff management, motivational and teamwork skills;
  • Passion, idealism, integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven, and self-directed;
  • Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory. Fluency in one or more additional languages, especially Spanish or French, is strongly preferred.
