Reporting Lines

The Fishery Officer reports to the Senior Fishery Officer (Head, Aquaculture Branch, FIAA).

Technical Focus

Development of sustainable, efficient and well-governed aquaculture practices that increase the production of fish and fish products from aquaculture while minimizing use of scarce resources, and creating an equitable sharing of risks and benefits among all value chain actors.

Implementation of policies and programmes of work aimed at maximising the positive impacts of aquaculture on countries' economic, social and environmental priorities, including food security and nutrition, and that are in line with FAO's Common Vision on Sustainable Food and Agriculture, the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries and associated technical guidelines.

Research, technical analysis, and project related services to support the delivery of programme projects, products, and services.

Key Functions

  • Researches and analyzes technical, social, economic, environmental, institutional, and technology related information, data and statistics and/or related policy issues to support the delivery of programme projects, products and services
  • Produces a variety of technical information, data, statistics and reports as well as input for technical documents and web pages.
  • Provides technical support/analysis to various assessments, studies and initiatives and provides technical backstopping to field projects.
  • Collaborates in the development of improved/updated tools, systems, processes, and databases.
  • Participates on multi-disciplinary teams, and/or leads working groups/teams collaborates with other departments and agencies on work groups and committees and promotes best practices.
  • Collaborates in, provides technical backstopping to and ensures the quality/effectiveness of capacity development activities within member countries such as policy support, organizational development and individual learning events including preparation of related information, learning materials, on-line tools.
  • Promotes knowledge sharing and best practices at international meetings and conferences and influences partners in stakeholder consultations.
  • Supports resource mobilization activities in accordance with the FAO Corporate strategy.

Specific Functions

  • Participates in the development of the work program for aquatic animal production, as well as in major new areas of work in relation to increasing the role of aquaculture in the agriculture sector
  • Collaborates with colleagues and private and public sector partners to incorporate Best Management Practices in line with the Ecosystem Approach to Aquaculture/EAS and the Departments Blue Growth Initiative
  • Liaises with partners to increase access of producers and promote the development of sustainable aquaculture value chains that also ensure equitable share of economic risks and benefits among value chain actors
  • Contributes to the organization of meetings, consultations and workshops on aspects and activities aimed at sustainable aquaculture development
  • Provides technical inputs to field projects, especially in relation to the development and production of a sustainable aquaculture

Minimum Requirements

  • Advanced university degree in agriculture, biology, biochemistry, animal nutrition, aquaculture, aquatic sciences or related discipline or a closely related field
  • Five years of relevant experience in aquaculture development, processing, including experience in the formulation and/or implementation of aquaculture operations in developing countries
  • Working knowledge of English, French or Spanish and limited knowledge of one of the other two or Arabic, Chinese, Russian

Technical/Functional Skills

  • Work experience in more than one location or area of work, particularly in field positions is desirable
  • Extent and relevance of experience in providing scientific support and advice to national, regional and international research and/or development projects in both developed and developing countries
  • Extent and relevance of experience in planning and implementation of research and/or development programmes in aquatic animals and their production and their interaction with other agricultural sectors
  • Demonstrated results-based management capabilities with an ability to support programmes, budgets and human resources efficiently under shifting priorities
  • Depth of knowledge of current global issues, trends, constraints, and research needs related to aquatic animal production
  • Ability to mobilize resources
  • Extent and relevance of experience in organizing international meetings, seminars and training courses
