World Learning is a leading international non-profit organization working to create a more peaceful and just world through education, development, and exchange. We are seeking an experienced Gender Equality & Social Inclusion (GESI) Specialist for the anticipated USAID-funded Leadership Activity in Myanmar. The project seeks to provide leadership training centered around scholarships in the U.S. to improve technical skills (including but not limited to economic affairs), promote tolerance of diversity, and advance Burma’s self-reliance.

The GESI Specialist will lead design and implementation of a context-specific gender and social inclusion analysis and ensure findings are adequately integrated into the program’s implementation and monitoring and evaluation plan. S/he will work closely with project leadership to develop inclusive outreach strategies and recruitment processes to ensure the inclusion of diverse participants, particularly women and marginalized populations, in the scholarship program. S/he will design and lead activities that build greater tolerance of ethnic and religious diversity among Leadership Activity participants.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate closely with the Chief of Party and Scholarship Manager to ensure full integration of social inclusion throughout program design, planning, and activity implementation;
  • Conduct gender and social inclusion analysis activities with program staff, beneficiaries, and key stakeholders; lead efforts to integrate inclusive practices and recommendations related to gender, youth with disabilities, and minority populations into program design and activities;
  • Develop inclusive outreach strategies and recruitment practices for the scholarship program;
  • Design and lead activities that build greater tolerance of ethnic and religious diversity among participants;
  • Serve as a resource and mentor program staff on social inclusion programming; conduct trainings and other capacity building activities as needed;
  • Working closely with the Monitoring and Evaluation team to develop specific GESI indicators and targets; lead the implementation and monitoring of social inclusion strategies across programming.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in international development, education, gender and inclusion, sociology, or related field;
  • A minimum of three to five years of progressive experience in social inclusion programming, such as youth and women’s empowerment, promoting ethnic and religious tolerance, and inclusion of persons with disabilities;
  • Experience in inclusive programming related to higher education, leadership development, and/or youth development preferred;
  • Strong understanding of the ethnic and religious diversity in Myanmar and the existing opportunities and challenges to increasing tolerance in this context;
  • Experience working with international organizations and donors in Myanmar;
  • Excellent communication and diplomatic skills, with a professional level of verbal and written fluency in English and Burmese; Burmese nationals preferred;
  • Strong communication, writing, and public speaking skills;
  • Commitment to the principles of inclusive approaches to programming that encourages full participation of individuals regardless of gender, disability status, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity or other marginalized status.
