Position Overview

CHAI’s Health Workforce Global Team seeks a Senior Associate to lead the team’s cross-project work related to community health and community health workers. As a member of the Health Workforce Global Team the Senior Associate will also be expected to work on content related to health workforce broadly as indicated by project need.

In its first year the position will be focused on two major projects. In the first project, CHAI is collaborating with other organizations to develop an online course on community health and health systems that will be targeted to community health policy makers and practitioners in low and middle income (LMIC) countries. The Senior Associate will support the development of course syllabi and content, ensuring high technical quality and strong relevance of content to CHAI’s partner governments and other LMIC leaders. In this capacity the Senior Associate will liaise significantly with partner organizations.

The Senior Associate will also provide technical assistance to the CHAI Zimbabwe team on their joint health workforce and health financing program, which has a significant community health focus. With regard to community health, the position will work closely with CHAI Zimbabwe to support the development of the Zimbabwe National Community Based Health Strategy and corresponding Community Essential Health Package. The project is also conducting scoping and preliminary engagement in the broader health workforce arena, and the Senior Associate will support CHAI Zimbabwe in these tasks, including through literature review and preparation of technical products related to key content areas, such as in-service training, human resources information systems and strategic planning. This role will require a close working partnership with the CHAI Zimbabwe team and periodic travel to Zimbabwe.

Community health is a growing area of work at CHAI across program areas, including CHAI’s Universal Health Coverage cluster (Health Workforce and Health Financing) and other program areas such as Malaria, Essential Medicines and Vaccines. To ensure that CHAI engages strategically on community health across programs CHAI’s Health Workforce team is develop a Community Health Hub function through which other teams can coordinate and share technical resources and lessons learned related to community health. The Senior Associate will lead the development of this hub and will serve as a technical resource to the Health Workforce Global Team and other CHAI teams engaging on matters of community health reform and community health worker policy.

The role may be flexibly based, with a preference for East Coast of the United States or Eastern or Southern Africa.

Responsibilities

Community Health Academy

  • Revise and finalize online course content on community health
  • Support the design and implementation of strategies for dissemination and uptake of course content
  • Develop syllabus for a course on health workforce and health systems
  • Other work as needed

Zimbabwe

Provide technical assistance to the CHAI Zimbabwe team to accomplish the following:

  • Develop and implement strategies for stakeholder engagement and buy-in in the community health arena
  • Provide technical feedback to other consultants and key players producing content relevant to the National Community Based Health Strategy and corresponding Community Essential Health Package
  • Cost the Community Essential Health Package
  • Further develop, validate and finalize the draft National Community Based Health Strategy
  • Develop a resource mobilization and financing strategy for the final National Community Based Health Strategy and corresponding Community Essential Health Package
  • Scope areas of potential engagement in health workforce, including in-service training, information systems and strategic planning and establish CHAI’s credibility in these areas

CHAI Community Health Technical Resource

  • Provide light touch technical input to other CHAI teams engaging on community health and community health workers
  • Propose and manage a mechanism for developing best practice and sharing lessons learned on community health at CHAI, such as through a community of practice or other platform
  • Provide a knowledge management function in the area of community health, including organizing and sharing key technical resources

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent plus 5 years work experience; or Advanced Degree plus 2 years work experience
  • Demonstrated technical expertise in national community health and community health workers
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in English, and the ability to communicate effectively with people of varied professional, cultural, and educational backgrounds
  • Demonstrated strong analytical, leadership, and problem solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and effectively in high-pressure, fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to work with teams across time zones and locations
  • Ability to develop, manage and maintain work plans with staff located in various geographies
  • Ability to work with humility and achieve results
  • High levels of proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and internet applications

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience supporting national community health reform in LMICs
  • Experience developing technical written content or course content
