Program Technical Advisor & Nutrition Specialist - Yemen

ADRA is seeking a Nutrition Specialist for a USAID/FFP/OFDA–funded programme in Yemen. The project aims to address acute malnutrition while working with other sectors on prevention. For over 20 years, ADRA has implemented relief and development activities in Yemen with funding from major international donors, including USAID. As Nutrition Specialist, his/her technical leadership in nutrition will deliver results while expanding ADRA’s position as a leader of food security and nutrition programming in Yemen in adherence with MoH/ UNICEF/ WFP and national protocols/guidelines, and in collaboration with all stakeholders. S/he will design, manage and provide holistic strategies to ensure that food insecurity and acute malnutrition are effectively addressed to through equitable inclusive integration of gender and youth at all levels throughout the entire award period. S/he will report to ADRA International Health Director on technical matters and to the ADRA country office on administrative issues.

This position is contingent upon receipt of funding and requires donor approval.



  • Postgraduate level degree, in nutrition, public health or related disciplines;
  • Minimum of 5 years of field experience at the community level is required;
  • Experience working in emergency contexts;
  • Proven leadership skills managing projects of a similar size and scope in developing countries, including experience effectively managing USAID development activities;
  • Demonstrated skills in participatory learning and action and facilitating collaborative problem solving;
  • A demonstrated capacity to lead the collection, analysis, and utilization of information from a broad range of sources;
  • Experience with designing and quality implementation of nutrition activities particularly CMAM and IYCF;
  • Knowledge of food ration designing and estimation of population food needs;
  • Written and spoken command of English languages.


  • Knowledge or understanding of nutrition context in Yemen;
  • Experience with USAID funding.

  • Provides technical advisory to implementation of nutrition activities in the project areas as guided by project objectives and goals, Yemen health and nutrition policies and international standards;
  • Fosters internal and external relationships for coordination and collaboration. This includes, but is not limited to, program partners and organizations doing similar work, including governmental entities;
  • Active representation of ADRA in Yemen Nutrition Cluster meetings and relevant working groups;
  • Collaborates with other senior technical staff to develop standard operating guidelines, quality assurance and control systems, milestones, successful startup and efficient technical service delivery mechanisms;
  • Identifies training needs of staff and develops capacity and mentorship initiatives to strengthen implementation of services and technical capacity of nutrition personnel;
  • In coordination with health and nutrition program staff, develops training curricula, facilitate trainings, service provision data collection and reporting;
  • Facilitates data collection for baseline surveys, qualitative and quantitative surveys on nutrition parameters;
  • In conjunction with the MEAL team, develops/adapts tools for data collection, analysis and reporting, takes the lead in analysing and interpreting collected data in nutrition;
  • Develops quantitative and qualitative reports of nutrition activities for different stakeholders in accordance with appropriate reporting guidelines;
  • Provides technical oversight to ensure integration of nutrition activities with other sectors, including WASH, resilience, agriculture and food security;
  • Actively participates in and represent ADRA at workshops, events, cluster and sector meetings where informatio are disseminated and discussed;
  • Develops and maintains strong working relationships and support excellent communication protocols with local government and Ministry officials, community leaders, community-based organizations, donors, partners and other stakeholders to enhance multi-agency and multi-sectorial cooperation and coordination;
  • Develops and maintains a safe environment that encourages the sharing of problems, ideas, and solutions, and efficiently and effectively adapt approaches to appropriately respond to feedback while respecting and prioritizing the needs of communities, especially the most vulnerable;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Travel required. Must have the ability to travel 35 % of the time, both locally and internationally.
