The NATO International Staff is recruiting for its Operations Division, a Head Operations B (NATO HQ, Brussels, Belgium) (Ref. 190539).

Are you a seasoned political affairs expert? Are you comfortable in leading a dynamic, multi-national team in a challenging environment? Do you have experience in crisis management and are ready to roll-up your sleeves? Then this position is for you!

You will be responsible for managing and leading a team of approximately 8 people. You will provide quality policy advice and strategy papers to the North Atlantic Council and the Operations Policy Committee regarding NATO-led missions in Afghanistan and Iraq. You will work under tight time constraints and respond to rapidly developing events.

Key challenges facing the successful candidate for the Head of Section during the next 2-3 years will include:

  1. The future scope of NATO’s training and capacity building mission in Iraq;
  2. The challenges and the future development of NATO’s presence in Afghanistan;
  3. The identification of strategic lessons learnt from NATO’s presence in Afghanistan and their application to future NATO operations and missions.

Profile:

The incumbent must:

  • possess a university degree;
  • have at least ten years’ experience executing similar work for a national administration, military or International Organisation;
  • have no fewer than three years’ professional experience managing and directing the work of others;
  • a demonstrable ability to produce clear and succinct written policy advice to high level decision makers;
  • have several years’ experience participating in a multinational environment or leading a multinational team;
  • have relevant experience in a national Ministry of Defence or Foreign Ministry;
  • have in-depth knowledge of NATO operations and missions;
  • possess the following minimum levels of NATO’s official languages (English/French): V (“Advanced”) in one; I (“Beginner”) in the other;
  • be prepared to work outside office hours and to travel when required.

The following would be considered an advantage:

  • field operational experience in Afghanistan, Iraq or other NATO operational environment;
  • experience as a civilian in high level security and policy making;
  • an ability to give presentations and oral briefings to external and internal audiences;
  • public diplomacy experience.
