Job summary

The Assistant Director of Development is part of the CSIS team that leads efforts to strategically develop relationships with and strengthen financial support from corporations, foundations, governments, and individuals to advance the Center’s institutional goals and objectives. The Assistant Director is a front-line fundraiser who works closely with CSIS program areas to create strong cases for support for potential and current partners and other supporters.

Essential duties and responsibilities

Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the following:

Donor Relations

  • Manages a portfolio of current and prospective donors at the $15,000 - $750,000 level;
  • Works with Deputy Chief Development Officer to establish membership and sponsorship goals and monitor progress towards those goals;
  • Oversees a portfolio of CSIS Programs, supporting them in their fundraising strategy and outreach efforts to corporations and other funders as needed;
  • Serves as the internal communications manager with the Development team to coordinate and disseminate program efforts and serves as ambassador for program outreach Center-wide;
  • Participates in program budget and strategy meetings to discuss current and emerging donor-related issues;
  • Executes donor recognition and fulfillment for complete portfolio;
  • Oversees the processing and acknowledgement of all gifts and grant agreements in portfolio;
  • Conducts visits with donors and prospective donors in portfolio and coordinates donor visits and develop strategies, as appropriate, for other staff members and volunteers;
  • Coordinates, writes, and executes corporate and individual proposals (including corporate foundations);
  • Oversees the maintenance and updating of all primary and secondary contacts and relationships in database;
  • Oversees all moves management, reporting, and stewardship activities as related to assigned donors and prospects;
  • Attends appropriate conferences and meetings, as well as keep up on the current philanthropic trends.


  • Works with the senior development staff to set fundraising and donor development goals;
  • Assists in the recognition and prioritization of organizational funding needs; keeps abreast of institutional and departmental priorities and programs;
  • Collaborates with the senior development staff to develop strategies for cultivation events and other events for donors and prospects in assigned portfolio;
  • Attends all special events attended by partners and prospects;
  • Attends select education events of interest to partners;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, education, and experience

  • Bachelor’s degree;
  • A minimum of 3 yrs. experience in fundraising, preferably with a focus on corporate and/or individual donors, or similar work in the private sector;
  • SalesForce database experience preferred;
  • Must possess a professional demeanor in his/her approach and appearance;
  • Interest in global development, international relations, and policy-related research; ability to remain up to date on the research agendas of CSIS programs;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; strong writing skills;
  • The ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment;
  • Knowledge of and experience in using research resources for prospects and funding opportunities;
  • Solid ability to understand and interpret budget and financial reports and related information;
  • Ability to travel on occasion.
