Reporting Lines

The Consultant/PSA will work under the overall technical supervision of AGPML Team Leader and under the direct supervision of an officer of the team.

Technical Focus

Sustainable intensification and diversification of annual and biennial cropping systems, including cereals, legumes and cruciferous as main crops as well as cover crops.

Tasks and responsibilities

The consultant/PSA will assist in the delivery of FAO’s work with the aim of increasing sustainability and resilience of annual and biennual cropping systems at global, regional, national and local levels. The key functions of the consultant/PSA may include all or parts of the following:

  • develop protocols for field demonstrations/trials aimed at demonstrating improved production systems that are diversified, productive, profitable and affordable indicating the most suitable: crop varieties; planting patterns and timing for crop rotation, intercropping or relay cropping as appropriate; planting density, spacing and depth; fertility management (nutrients cycling); weed management; pest management; list of necessary equipment, material and supplies to be purchased, prepare technical specifications and arrange for their procurement;
  • conduct data collection, carry out studies, analyse technical information needed for the development, formulate, update and/or finalize the technical documents, reports, policy briefs and strategies related to the sustainable intensification of crop production and Conservation Agriculture;
  • support implementation of integrated multisectoral approaches to sustainable intensification of crop production and Conservation Agriculture through backstopping field missions;
  • carry out capacity development initiatives through development and promotion of appropriate materials and curricula;
  • develop appropriate manuals to disseminate methodologies, guidelines or standards;
  • assist to develop and update technical specifications related equipment for adoption and promotion of Conservation Agriculture;
  • integrate sound agronomic practices with sustainable mechanization options where appropriate;
  • develop and strengthen the networks relevant to Conservation Agriculture;
  • organize or assist with facilitating and coordinating technical meetings and workshops;
  • develop communication products to enhance exchange of information within and outside of FAO;
  • provide technical support to individual requests;
  • formulate project documents as per FAO project cycle guidelines and procedures;
  • other duties as required.

Candidates Will Be Assessed Against The Following

Minimum Requirements

  • Advanced university degree for consultants and university degree for PSAs in Agronomy, Agricultural Sciences, Plant Sciences, Natural Resource Management or related fields;
  • One to ten years of relevant working experience including field experience in developing countries (depending on level);
  • Working knowledge of English, French or Spanish and limited knowledge of one of the other two or Arabic, Chinese, Russian (for Consultants)/Working knowledge of English, French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese or Russian (for PSAs).

  • Practical work experience in developing countries;

  • Extent and relevance of experience in private sector is considered an asset.
