The role – Gender Mainstreaming Adviser will support the development of capacity in mainstreaming gender across development sectors through the delivery of analytical, technical, research, programmatic and policy advice on gender equality and the empowerment of women to Pacific Island countries and other stakeholders, including civil society, in the context of the project Progressing Gender Equality in the Pacific (PGEP). This role will work closely with other SPC technical divisions and programmes in support of a more coordinated and effective approach to mainstreaming a gender perspective across development sectors.

The key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Analytical and policy advice;
  • Regional coordination and monitoring of gender equality in the Pacific including partnership building;
  • Capacity building and training;
  • Research and analysis;
  • Organisational strengthening.

Key selection criteria:

Qualifications

  • A master’s degree in a relevant field such as sociology, anthropology, gender studies, or human rights.

Knowledge and experience

  • At least 8 years of experience in the field of gender mainstreaming;
  • Demonstrated experience in the design and implementation of gender programmes and policies, preferably related to gender mainstreaming, gender statistics, and national and sectoral gender policies;
  • Sound knowledge of gender and development issues in the Pacific islands region;
  • Knowledge of and experience implementing and supporting gender equality frameworks such as the Pacific Platform for Action for Gender Equality and Women’s Human Rights, The Pacific Leaders Gender Equality Declaration, The Beijing Platform for Action, The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, or the Sustainable Development Goals;
  • Delivery of training and other capacity building approaches.

Essential skills

  • Programme development and management skills;
  • Demonstrated research, analytical and writing skills;
  • Ability to work across multiple sectors.

Language skills

  • Excellent English communication skills (oral and written) with a working knowledge of French being an advantage.

Interpersonal skills and cultural awareness

  • Ability to work in a multicultural, inclusive and equitable environment;
  • Ability to develop and sustain professional partnerships, including working with governments, civil society, and development partners;
  • Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team, including in multicultural and multisectoral contexts.
