This position is located in the Knowledge Management Team of the Policy, Knowledge Management and Coordination Division of the Office of Counter-Terrorism at Headquarters in New York. The Political Affairs Officer reports to a Senior Political Affairs Officer.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Gathers, selects, analyses and maintains records of information contained in communications and publications received from different sources, including the press.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of events relating to political issues as they affect the countries and knowledge management work for which the staff member is responsible.
  • Keeps abreast of latest trends and developments in the area of assignment and provides inputs on issues to senior officials and colleagues in missions and elsewhere in the Secretariat.
  • Provides technical and substantive back up, as well as administrative, logistic and planning support in the implementation of mandates of the Division.
  • Maintains contacts with other sectors of the UN, other international organizations and governments on knowledge management, coordination and policy matters.
  • Monitors actions taken and reports, researchs policy documents published by intergovernmental groups, UN organisations, government and non-governmental organizations.
  • Selects, classifies and stores in computerised databases information relating to best practices relating to preventing and countering terrorism.
  • Participates in fact-finding and other missions to countries within assigned area of responsibility.
  • Participates in provision of secretariat services to the Global Counter-Terrorism Coordination Compact Committee and its Working Groups.
  • Prepares meetings of the SG/DSG/USG with officials from countries under the Organization's purview.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Knowledge of counter-terrorism and prevention of violent extremism conducive to terrorism. Ability to identify and analyze political, ethnic, racial, social and economic problems that are conducive to the spread of terrorism. Ability to support senior coordination meetings. Takes responsibility in preparing summary and analytical reports on political issues. Education

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, law, public administration or other related. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

  • A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, conflict resolution or related area is required. Experience with programmes in the field of counter-terrorism and prevention of violent extremism is desirable. Experience with knowledge management is desirable. Experience with inter-agency coordination is desirable. Experience drafting reports is desirable. Experience supporting senior level coordination meetings is desirable.

Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position(s) advertised, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
