The Senior Development Officer develops and implements fundraising strategies and activities for a portfolio of active donors and prospects for the Economic Studies (ES) program, in coordination with the Senior Director of Development. This involves managing, prioritizing and executing development activities, including identifying prospects, cultivating and retaining funder relationships, developing written proposals and materials for support, and maintaining accurate tracking and record-keeping.

Development and Implementation of Fundraising Activities (70%):

  • Manages a fundraising portfolio of donors (a mix of foundation, corporate, individual and institutional) for ES centers, projects, initiatives, and/or scholars, as designated by the Senior Director, and implements and tracks day-to-day fundraising operations within this portfolio.
  • Working with scholars, identifies fundraising opportunities and researches new prospects.
  • Moves donors through the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship process, including identifying, arranging and attending meetings with scholars, conducting follow-up, managing correspondence and contact with donors; and serving as key contact for gift agreement process with donors.
  • Writes concept notes, solicitation letters, and proposals in coordination with scholars and assembles all proposal materials. Edits concept papers and proposals drafted by scholars to ensure high quality, readability, a consistent voice, and adherence to Brookings policies and funder guidelines.
  • Collaborates with colleagues in central development and from other research programs on fundraising efforts, including assistance with producing multi-program or institution-wide proposals that include the work of ES scholars.
  • Develops implementation plans with center directors and scholars, along with the Senior Director, to ensure a seamless transition from concept note to project implementation folding in donor stewardship and information-sharing.
  • Provides support to the Senior Director and VP as needed in the cultivation and stewardship of the Economic Studies Council, a group of individuals that provide financial and intellectual support to the program, and the prioritization of research activities as they relate to funding opportunities.
  • Represents the Senior Director at internal or external meetings, as requested.

Coordination of Fundraising Efforts within ES and with other Brookings Programs (15%):

  • As a member of the ES development team, coordinates prospects and fundraising activities with the institution’s central development office and participates in meetings with central and program development teams, ES and central finance teams, and others throughout Brookings to coordinate activities related to development.
  • Leads in the drafting of development documents for ES and its direction, as well as other communication tools that are needed for effective outreach.
  • Coordinates with scholars and communications staff to ensure that major ES events and publications reach prospective or actual donors and achieve maximum fundraising impact from Brookings activities and publications.

Administrative Fundraising Support (15%)

  • Using the databases maintained by the institution, ensures careful coordination of fundraising strategy, research, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship with central development office and other Brookings research programs.
  • Working with scholars and staff, directs the production of grant reports. Works with scholars and the finance team to track deliverables and manage grant modifications or special reporting needs. Liaises with funders to obtain grant modifications or extensions, as needed.
  • Maintains donor database information in Raiser’s Edge and comprehensive donor profiles documenting correspondence with donors, meeting notes, proposals, reports, and background information.
  • Maintains understanding of relevant research topics and how they may affect and provide fundraising opportunities. Monitors philanthropic trends as they relate generally to ES’s work.
  • In coordination with the Senior Director, delegates administrative tasks to identified support staff.

Education/Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Minimum seven years of development-related experience. Candidate should be able to illustrate a proven track record of success in fundraising; including prior experience with direct solicitation from multiple types of donors, as well as successful proposal writing experience. Strong writing skills required. Must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S.

Knowledge/Skills Requirements:

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with minimum of three years of proposal writing experience required. Strategic thinking ability, strong interpersonal skills and high degree of adaptability. Strong time management skills including the ability to work independently and meet deadlines. Sound judgment and discretion, with entrepreneurial spirit. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and to successfully juggle multiple tasks and deadlines. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with and gain the respect and support of various constituencies, including program officers, scholars, and donors. Interest in economics and public policy is desired.
