Job Summary

The Senior Advisor, University Engagement and Research will serve as the lead for CRS' engagement with universities for the purposes of research and other learning collaborations. The Senior Advisor will work closely with country, regional, and headquarters teams to identify, facilitate, and manage relationships with universities and research institutes for research and learning initiatives and collaborations. As the lead for university engagement, the Senior Advisor will represent CRS in in-person and virtual engagements with existing and potential university partners, as well as at other relevant forums. The Senior Advisor will serve as the point person for development, refinement, and promotion of the agency's research-related policies, procedures and practices, working together with other research advisors. The Senior Advisor will also provide technical assistance to specific research activities and contribute to mobilizing resources to support research activities in collaboration with universities.

Roles and Key Responsibilities

University Relationship Management and Coordination (35%)

  • Lead the identification, facilitation, and management of relationships with priority universities and other research institutions
  • Work closely with regions, country programs, and headquarters technical teams to identify and engage with university and other research partners for research activities
  • Coordinate campus visits for CRS technical teams to universities, as needed
  • Cultivate and maintain strong working relationships with representatives in relevant departments at universities, and support management and strengthening of these relationships
  • Represent CRS at relevant external conferences and workshops to advance the agency's influence in development and humanitarian research and practitioner translation
  • Advise on agreements and MoUs for research activities, in consultation with the Office of General Counsel and Procurement

Research Technical Assistance (25%)

  • Provide technical assistance to CRS research activities in specific areas, based on field needs and on the Senior Advisor's areas of specialization
  • Coordinate guidance and refinement of CRS research policies, procedures, and practices, and serve as the lead for the CRS MEAL Policy 10 (Research)
  • Work with MEAL, sector, and field colleagues to help ensure that research activities are high quality and responsive to agency priorities
  • Serve as the point person for guidance to regions, country programs and other colleagues on the need for institutional review board (IRB) review for planned research activities, in coordination with other research advisors
  • Convene the CRS Research, Learning, and Evidence Task Force and other internal teams to strengthen the generation and use of evidence

Business Development (20%)

  • Serve as a point person for funding opportunities associated with priority university partners
  • Support efforts to position CRS as a strong partner for funding opportunities for relevant research and research translation activities
  • Identify opportunities for CRS to mobilize external research funding
  • Contribute to research-related proposals
  • Review proposals and SOWs with research and university partner components

Knowledge Management and Learning (20%)

  • Advise CRS colleagues on identifying and documenting learning and evidence about sectors, practices, and methodologies for internal and external publications
  • Work with technical and communications colleagues to promote dissemination of research findings, such as briefs, webinars, videos, and presentations at key forums
  • Oversee the management and use of knowledge management platforms including the University Engagement and Research site, monthly reports, agency-level research tracking, and agency strategy reporting functions
  • Lead university learning collaborations (e.g., Notre Dame Writing Fellowship)
  • Collaborate with HR on research internships including updating and circulating opportunities to host research interns
  • Lead capacity strengthening of CRS staff on research and university collaboration by providing guidance, training and resources as needed, such as at annual summits and staff orientations

Basic Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in relevant field required (development studies, economics, public health, etc.). PhD or equivalent degree (e.g., MD, DrPH, EdD) strongly preferred
  • Minimum of seven years of work experience in relevant areas
  • Experience with research required
  • Experience and networks with universities and other research institutions
  • Knowledge of specific humanitarian and development sectors
  • Familiarity with the Institutional Review Board review processes
  • Experience developing curricula, tools, and other learning products
  • Track record of contributing significantly to successful business development activities for public and/or private donor resources
  • Experience with program monitoring and evaluation including development of indicators, data collection tools and methodologies, data analysis, and data presentation
  • Required Languages - English

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage diverse academic relationships
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with a strong ability to synthesize findings
  • Demonstrated ability to transfer knowledge to diverse audiences through training, mentoring, and other formal and informal methods
  • Ability to translate complex research methods or findings into practical conclusions and practitioner guidance

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional working knowledge of Spanish, French or Arabic
  • Experience working with an international NGO and/or a university
  • Experience living and working overseas
  • Strong knowledge of research methods required, and knowledge of both quantitative and qualitative methods
  • Peer reviewed or grey literature publications
  • Skills to represent the organization at meetings with donors, government, international NGOs, and local partners. Understanding of partnership principles
  • Proficient in MS Office packages (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), Web Conferencing Applications and knowledge of information and budget management systems and knowledge-sharing networks
