POSITION SUMMARY:

The Senior Vice President for International Programs is responsible for leading World Relief’s International Program’s division. Internationally, World Relief maintains ongoing relief and development operations in nine countries with over 1,000 overseas employees. The SVP for International Programs is responsible for providing strategic leadership to the International Programs Leadership team in order to ensure World Relief’s programs are effectively executed and aligned with the organization’s mission. The SVP will lead the International Programs Leadership and have direct oversight of directors and key leaders within the division. In addition, as a member of World Relief’s executive team, the SVP will work closely with the President/CEO and leaders of other divisions to promote collaboration and alignment throughout the organization.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Guide the work of World Relief internationally to ensure it is as an expression of World Relief’s mission to empower the local church to serve the most vulnerable that is consistent with the organizations seven principles of integral mission
  • Provide strategic leadership to World Relief’s international programs division and ensure that short-and long-term objectives are aligned to organizational strategy.
  • Through supervision of unit directors ensure effective execution World Relief’s programs throughout international country offices
  • Promote and foster accountability for high quality program delivery that is aligned to World Relief’s mission and technically sound consistent with international best practices. Additionally, expand the evidence base for World Relief’s programs and cultivate a culture of data driven decision making by providing oversight to planned improvements to the MEAL framework. Ensure the provision of sound technical input, management oversight, and necessary allocation of resources to all programs supported and operated by World Relief
  • Support program expansion by providing both oversight and direct contributions as needed to World Relief’s efforts to secure funding from public revenue sources and collaborating closely with World Relief’s private fundraising teams in other divisions
  • Provide financial oversight to the international division by overseeing an annual division budget of approximately $40 million dollars. Responsibilities include managing the annual budget process, making resource allocation decisions, and monitoring expense and revenue trends
  • Maintain momentum and delivery of results on key strategic initiatives ongoing in the international division, including a global gender equality initiative, the pursuit of certification with the Core Humanitarian Standard, expanding application of Integral Mission to new program sectors, and growing public revenues for key program sectors
  • Continue to provide understanding and promotion of World Relief’s unique commitment to work closely with local churches by continuing to expand the Church Empowerment Zone (CEZ) model and integrate and adapt the model to other development and humanitarian sector work and develop and implement strategies to bring more depth and breadth to WR’s work through the local church
  • Foster a healthy leadership culture within the division while providing direct management and supervision of directors and through interactions with others fostering transparent, collaborative leadership within the division
  • Serve as a member of World Relief’s Executive Committee and collaborate with other division leaders to support organizational alignment at the enterprise level
  • Represent World Relief externally in various forums related to World Relief’s international programs, including meeting with the government in the US and abroad, churches, donors, peers in other organizations, and other stakeholders.
  • Provide senior spiritual leadership to the international division
  • Encourage professional development of employees in the division
  • Monitor and approve human resource activity (staff hiring and retention, policy/practice implementation, staff care, etc.) in the division and coordinate this activity with the directors and the HR Department, ensuring fair and consistent practice for all staff

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Mature personal Christian faith; commitment to the mission of World Relief; demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the evangelical community in the U.S. and abroad, and commitment to the local church
  • The ability to lead complex, multicultural teams as demonstrated through a track record of sustained or progressively expanding leadership roles
  • Functional understanding of integral mission and modalities for its application in a diverse set of contexts globally
  • Proven skills in various aspects of business development
  • Knowledge of technical programming aligned with World Relief’s core competency including humanitarian response, health, and equipping churches to implement integrated programming
  • Advanced knowledge of international issues, especially as it relates to the needs of the poor and a basic understanding of the trends, practices and interventions in each key program area with the ability to analyze and interpret business/technical field journals and communicate the same to various constituencies in the U.S. and abroad
  • Strong oral and written communication skills with public speaking and media experience, and proven experience in preparation and presentation of reports, proposals, budgets and speeches. Proven track record in building and maintaining high-level relationships (i.e. government officials, board members, church leaders, and corporate executives)
  • Ability to define problems, collect meaningful data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions and make timely and accurate decisions
  • Ability to anticipate the impact of multiple programs and strategies; chart a flexible course that can seize on opportunities to expand the impact and influence of WR in our International Programs area
  • Ability to lead a ministry planning process that will build a divisional framework to develop and manage international programs
  • Ability to collaboratively manage the International Program Team, build an effective team that works together with enthusiasm and commitment to the task of acting as the Body of Christ in the world, ministering to, lifting up, and building pathways for self-help for those who have been forgotten by the world
  • Ability to pursue and implement partnerships with complimentary ministries, churches and organizations
  • Ability to motivate and inspire WR staff: church partners and stakeholders with the work and stewardship of our International Programs

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Significant leadership experience in international program development through a framework of Integral Mission in difficult and complex environments
  • At least ten years in leadership or technical roles within the international development and/or humanitarian sector with at least five of those years in senior positions with responsibilities for strategy, budgeting, management, evaluation and measurement of results in complex ministry situations
  • Significant leadership experience leading in international locations outside the applicant’s home country
  • Bachelor’s Degree required
  • Graduate study in international development related field desirable
  • Mature and personal Christian faith and participation in a local church
  • Desire to serve and empower the Church to impact vulnerable communities
  • Strong commitment to the mission, vision, and values of World Relief
  • Willingness to travel up to 8 weeks per year
  • Capacity to explore and gather new ideas and approaches that can propel WR forward; apply a deep experience and competence base in relief and development; stimulate the Executive Committee with ongoing education and clear communication of ministry needs around the world that match the mission and priorities of WR
  • Capacity to assess and evaluate ideas, strategies for development, and existing programs to determine their current or potential effectiveness, performance and results in conformity with intended indicators, targets, and standards
  • Organizational skills; strong leadership competencies; self-directed; decisive; problem solver; media capable; diplomatic; ability to prioritize; advanced cross-cultural sensitivity and communication skills; assessment and evaluation skills; strong relational and human resource skills; commitment to team; skill in training and group facilitation
  • Willingness to travel a minimum 15-20% of the time with 75% of that travel done internationally. (Note, this is contingent on corporate and international travel restrictions being reduced.)
