Duties and Responsibilities

The Nutrition Director designs and oversees implementation of a market-based nutrition-sensitive programming designed to increase the market availability and local purchase of nutritious, safe foods, incorporating relevant nutrition-sensitive social behavior change (SBC) strategies to ensure increased demand for and consumption of priority nutritious foods in local communities, with a focus on women and young children.

  • Provide technical direction and oversight of all project nutrition activities;
  • Ensures integration of nutrition-sensitive activities across agriculture and market systems activities;
  • Oversees design and implementation of evidence-based SBC formative research and SBC interventions to increase demand for and consumption of nutritious foods;
  • Oversees design, implementation, and evaluation of impact studies on market-driven nutrition-sensitive pathways and functional literacy;
  • Ensures that youth and women’s empowerment strategies are integrated across Yidgiri interventions;
  • Identifies innovative approaches and best practices for increasing marketing and consumption of nutritious foods in local markets;
  • Draws out the experience and evidence generated by field programming to develop into case studies as a contribution to the global evidence base;
  • Mentorship across the Project teams to build in-house expertise in nutrition and food systems programming;
  • Thought leadership in nutrition and food systems;
  • Identification of areas of nutrition-sensitive collaboration with other implementing organizations;
  • Manages research and partnership opportunities;
  • Oversees development of relevant research activities;
  • Leads donor reporting for nutrition activities.

Job Requirements

Qualifications

  • A Master’s Degree in nutrition, public health, food systems or related field. PhD preferred;
  • 8+ years of technical experience implementing nutrition programs to improve household dietary intake, including but not limited to agriculture, market systems, and/or food processing;
  • Strong knowledge of nutritional status across the life cycle, evidence-based nutrition-sensitive and nutrition-specific interventions designed to improve diets and food security among nutritionally vulnerable populations;
  • Knowledge of agriculture and food systems interventions designed to increased availability, accessibility, and consumption of nutritious foods in local markets;
  • Experience with conducting qualitative and quantitative programmatic research;
  • Experience working on nutrition-sensitive programming in Burkina Faso or similar West African contexts;
  • Demonstrated experience in multi-sectoral nutrition policy research and policy advocacy coordination and support to both public and civil society organizations is desired;
  • Demonstrated experience leading successful international agriculture, health, and nutrition proposal design and development;
  • Strong working knowledge of donor (USAID, BHA, USDA, DFID, GIZ, WB, et al.) priorities and regulations;
  • Demonstrated experience with nutrition-related partnership or consortium building;
  • Experience working on projects with food transformation components, including but not limited to value-added processing, particularly for improved nutrition or shelf-life; processor and market food safety, sanitation, and hygiene; food vendor and local food market standards and policies; and or food retailing and marketing strongly preferred;
  • Experience implementing programs that promote stronger household economic decision-making behaviors amongst women, strengthening gender balance among market actors, and utilize SBC activities;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Experience managing a team;
  • Fluency in French and English required;
  • Additional local language skills appreciated.
