The Program Manager - Brazil Agricultural Sector will support our work promoting ethical recruitment and fair, safe, and legal labor practices in the agricultural sector in Brazil. This position will work with Verité staff to manage and carry out risk assessments, trainings, stakeholder engagements, and supplier consulting services for Verité’s growing portfolio of agriculture industry clients in Brazil, in sectors such as palm oil, coffee, and cocoa.

Tasks and specific responsibilities

  • Design, conduct, and manage supply chain risk assessments and other compliance‐related research;
  • Develop tools and training materials for use by private sector actors to enable adherence to international labor standards in the agricultural sector;
  • Provide trainings and management systems consulting to private sector partners on issues of due diligence and adherence to international labor standards related to recruitment, forced labor, child labor, gender‐based discrimination, occupational safety and health and other acceptable conditions of work;
  • Produce reports of risk assessment findings as well as progress or deliverable reports for funders and clients;
  • Network with various stakeholders ranging from political actors to business and civil society stakeholders, both internationally and in Brazil and its trading partners;
  • Assist in business development, including building relationships with clients and funders and developing scopes of work, concept notes, grant proposals, and budgets;
  • Participate in calls and in‐person meetings with clients and funders;
  • Travel frequently within Brazil to oversee and participate in research, training, stakeholder engagement, other activities;
  • Occasional international travel within Latin America and to Verité headquarters in Amherst, MA;
  • Willingness to work outside of regular hours when necessary;
  • Carry out other duties as required.

Qualifications for this position

  • Minimum of five years of relevant professional experience in the sustainability, corporate social responsibility, inclusive business design, public‐private partnership, ethical sourcing, labor rights, and/or development fields;
  • Understanding of key labor issues, including recruitment, forced labor, child labor, gender‐based discrimination, and occupational safety and health;
  • A strong background in the intersection between gender and labor, development, or social justice issues is strongly preferred;
  • Familiarity with agricultural supply chains in Latin America (expertise on the Brazilian coffee and/or palm oil sectors preferred);
  • Experience building the capacity of international brands and their suppliers to comply with international standards and local laws related to labor and human rights is desirable;
  • Ability to maintain working relationships with diverse stakeholders, including coalition building and partnership promotion between workers and their organizations, civil society, the private sector, and government agencies;
  • Ability to meet deadlines, achieve targets, and provide all required inputs to deliverables;
  • Excellent organizational and prioritization skills, coupled with strong and creative problem‐solving skills;
  • Meticulous attention to detail;
  • Ability to work well in groups and independently;
  • Intellectual curiosity and the ability to learn quickly;
  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field (e.g. social science, agronomy, environmental science, human rights, business) required; Master’s degree preferred;
  • Professional fluency in Portuguese required and at least intermediate level fluency in English required. Professional fluency in Spanish strongly desired;
  • Previous experience with US‐government‐funded projects (USAID, US Department of Labor, US Department of State, etc.) is desirable.
