Org. Setting and Reporting

The position is located in the United Nations Office in Geneva, in the Office of the Director-General, in the Political Affairs and Partnerships Section.

Responsibilities

Under the Supervision of the Senior Political Affairs Officer the incumbent performs the following duties:

  • Contribute to the outreach and partnership building activities of the Office of the Director-General
    • Contribute to the partnership building activities of the Director-General, inter alia identifying options for joint projects in support of the work of the United Nations and maintaining relations with stakeholders in various organizations and with relevant networks and platforms;
    • Contribute to the outreach activities of the Office of the Director-General, inter alia serving as the focal point for select events with Member States, international organizations, civil society organizations and academic and private sector entities, overseeing both substantive and logistical aspects of the preparations;
    • Contribute to the communications and image-building activities of the Director-General and deliver presentations on the work of the Organization upon request;
    • Provide support on inter-agency matters, inter alia monitoring and reporting on the work of the United Nations family in Geneva, and maintaining relations with counterparts to facilitate joint efforts;
    • Represent the Office of the Director-General in system-wide policy discussions or processes, monitoring and analyzing developments and proposing options for how UNOG can support and facilitate the lien;
    • Draft the Director-General's addresses, speeches and other public pronouncements; draft communications, correspondence and other texts for the Director-General 's signature; liaise with organizers and substantive secretariats in the drafting process;
    • Serve as Section focal point for the UNOG annual report;
    • Accompany the Director-General and/or the Chief of Section on official travel, as required.
  • Research analysis and reporting on political matters for the Director-General
    • Prepare background and briefing papers as well as talking points for the Director-General in preparation for meetings with dignitaries and high-level officials; assist in the organization of such meetings;
    • Participate in the Director-General's meetings with dignitaries and high-level officials; prepare notes on the meetings and, as required, draft reports/notes to the Secretary-General and/or senior United Nations officials on the results;
    • Draft correspondence, background material, reports and notes on political affairs/inter-agency related matters;
    • Contribute to the organization of political meetings hosted or facilitated by the Director-General, including regular briefings and joint events with partner organizations.
    • Carry out other ad hoc tasks, as may be required by the Director-General, the Chef de Cabinet or the Senior Political Affairs Officer.

  • Professionalism: In-depth knowledge of political issues as they relate to the United Nations including with respect to the Organization's work with regional organizations and inter-agency affairs. Solid knowledge of the work of the United Nations and of the functioning of the United Nations system is essential. Demonstrated ability to provide policy advice and recommendations on political issues to high-level officials. Ability to produce analytical reports and papers on political trends and their implications for the United Nations, and to review and edit the work of others. Ability to develop and maintain contacts with a variety of stakeholders relevant to the political work of the Organization. Shows pride in work and in achievements. Demonstrates professional competence and mastery of subject matter. Is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results. Education

  • Advanced degree in project or programme management, administration, international relations, political science, social sciences, communications or related fields. A first-level university degree in combination with at least two additional years of relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced degree.

Work Experience

  • A minimum of five years of progressively responsible work experience in project or programme management, administration or related is required.
  • Providing support to high-level senior officials is required.
  • Coordinating high-level events, from concept to final execution is required.
  • Preparing and coordinating large, multi-stakeholder reports in a variety of formats is required.
  • Drafting speeches and political background material for high-level senior officials is desirable.
  • Experience in the UN Common System is desirable.
  • Delivering presentations and briefings to multicultural audiences with a particular focus on the work, structure, and priorities of the United Nations is desirable.

Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English and French is required.
