This position is located at the United Nations Global Compact Office in New York (NYHQ). The incumbent reports to the Senior Programme Officer, Participant Relations. The Head of Communications is the identified spokesperson for the UN Global Compact, working in tandem with the Executive Director and Deputy Director.


Under the supervision of the Senior Programme Officer, Participant Relations, the Head, Communications is responsible for the following duties:

  • Takes the lead in the strategy, planning, development and implementation of Global Compact corporate communications for both external and internal purposes. Develops the UNGC corporate communications strategy and plan to present the Initiative’s work and impact to build a strong, bold, sharp and principle-based brand. This includes complex communications (including speeches, talking points, papers, reports, global promotion initiatives, and public information programmes) and day-to-day tactical communications (including news items, letters and informational updates on the UN Global Compact); where appropriate, works with departments, funds and agencies to develop ways to implement campaigns system-wide and to incorporate the campaign message and themes into all relevant events and products; participates as a member of the Executive Management Team.
  • Takes the lead on the strategic drafting and editing of broader business communications as requested, including input to Secretary-General speeches and remarks, UN reports and events.
  • Identifies sources and seeks funding and other assistance for major campaigns.
  • Provides advice and expertise to managers, senior officers and other staff on a range of communications issues, methods, and approaches; anticipates and resolves communications/public relations issues/problems. Develops and prepares executive communications on behalf of the Executive Director. Leads and inspires the communications team, and works closely with the Marketing team.
  • Develops and nurtures relationships and strategic partnerships with key constituencies such as media partners, strategic agency partners, and grows new partnerships to maximize the impact of Global Compact promotional objectives; serves as a spokesperson/principal liaison to media organizations, governmental bodies, national groups, private sector organizations, educational organizations, international organizations on behalf of the Global Compact; handles crisis communications when needed.
  • Prepares or oversees preparation of a diverse range of information communications products across the initiative globally as well as in the NY Office.
  • Drafts complex material for UN newsletters, periodicals, reports and books and edits drafts prepared by junior officers.
  • Evaluates results and impact of communications activities; reports on developments, trends and attitudes regarding the UN Global Compact.
  • Represents the Global Compact in meetings and conferences; fulfills speaking engagements and makes presentations to groups on UN activities and advocates issues of concern; organizes media coverage and arranges for media contacts, briefings, interviews; organizes seminars, lectures, conferences, public events on major issues and events concerning the organization. Acts as the UNGC communications representative in relation to the UN Communications Group.
  • Manages publications; produces materials for print/electronic/voice/visual media.
  • Assists in day-to-day communications operations to include participating in the coordination of substantive and administrative activities, interpreting and disseminating policy, providing procedural advice, improving reporting systems, handling operational and administrative queries, managing the Communications team budget and preparing budget submissions, establishing and/or coordinating training programmes and monitoring and evaluating results.
  • May coordinate and direct a team of public information staff and/or mentor and supervise the work of junior officers on specific projects.

  • Planning & Organizing: Develops clear goals that are consistent with agreed strategies; identifies priority activities and assignments; adjusts priorities as required; allocates appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work; foresees risks and allows for contingencies when planning; monitors and adjusts plans and actions as necessary; uses time efficiently.


Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, public affairs, political science, international relations, public administration, economics/business or related field. A first-level degree (Bachelor’s or equivalent) in the specified fields with two additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, public administration or related area is required. Experience communicating to business, corporations, and/or corporate foundations is required. Experience in the drafting and editing of complex materials in English is required. Experience in the field corporate sustainability especially as it relates to UN, or a comparable international organization, - business collaboration is required. Experience both in the private sector and the UN, or a comparable international organization is required. Experience in the field of corporate delivery on the Sustainable Development Goals is desirable. Experience in team and leadership development is desirable. Experience working with senior executives is desirable.


English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another official UN language is an advantage.
