DESCRIPTION

The Project Leader will provide global leadership to a large, private-sector oriented aquaculture project that is intended to increase productivity, income, nutrition and women’s empowerment for smallholder fish farmers in Bangladesh and Nigeria. In Bangladesh the focus is on using private sector business and digital approaches to empower small-scale farmers at scale. In Nigeria, the focus is building an improved knowledge base on the potential role of aquaculture in meeting development goals for that country, and to establish the analytical underpinnings for future decisions about developing Nigeria’s aquaculture sector and its contribution to the economy and livelihoods of that region.

S/he will provide overall leadership of the project and country-level activities throughout their lifecycle, including engaging with country teams that will support planning, implementing, and reporting throughout. A critical component of the job will be to bring private sector experiences and business knowledge to WorldFish, and to lead preparation and implementation of the private sector engagement strategy for the project and for the broader organization, seeking to leverage for-profit partners in achieving the project goals for sustainable aquaculture growth while delivering positive impacts at scale for smallholders within both countries.

The position will be based out of Penang, Malaysia and will involve significant international travel.

Specific duties include:

  • Lead a multi-disciplined team delivering new and unique impacts in aquaculture;
  • Identify and enable investments into aquaculture production and value chains that contribute to the objectives of improved smallholder productivity, womens empowerment, better market connections for smallholders and increased fish consumption;
  • Build aquaculture teams and networks in Bangladesh and Nigeria, plan project and country research and investment activities, and define outputs and outcomes that will contribute to project milestones and targeted outcomes;
  • Mobilize resources and partnerships for supporting aquaculture within Bangladesh and Nigeria, all of which will lead to greater investment and the establishment of a strong, impact-oriented sustainable aquaculture program in both countries;
  • Provide mentoring and technical assistance to research teams that identify critical analysis of market opportunities and enabling of small and medium-sized enterprises and other business opportunities within aquaculture value chains;
  • Establish partnerships that support sustainable aquaculture and which move WorldFish technologies and research innovations into better institutional linkages with private sector partners, national institutions and policy makers in Bangladesh and Nigeria;
  • Prepare project workplans and ensure project reporting at global and country levels;
  • Establish monitoring and evaluation systems aligned to the project Results Framework and ensure project learning is effectively captured and used;
  • Contribute to WorldFish’s effective engagement with the private sector to improve impact and resource mobilization.

REQUIREMENTS

Required qualifications:

  • Previous experience of 5-10 years in aquaculture development, with at least 3 years working within or in close cooperation with the private sector and/or business engaged in aquaculture or related sectors;
  • An excellent knowledge base and technical skills, with demonstrated ability to perform critical thinking on market systems and business analysis;
  • Strong leadership, coaching and mentoring skills, combined with the proven ability to provide technical guidance and leadership in sustainable aquaculture research and development;
  • Excellence in writing, reporting and communication in English;
  • Proven ability in project management involving multiple country, multi-partner and cross-disciplinarity skills;
  • Prior fundraising experience with the private sector and international donors and investors would be considered a strong plus;
  • Ability to work in developing countries, combined with the personality and cultural understanding required to work in a multicultural setting;
  • Excellent written and verbal English proficiency;
  • The ability to work effectively with colleagues from complementary disciplines;
  • The capacity to work across multiple environments, with proven ability in Bangladesh and/or Nigeria a significant advantage;
  • Proactive and self-motivated, creative and curious, strong problem solving skills, an achievement orientation and strong in all aspects of teamwork;
  • Capable of establishing and maintaining an alignment for all players to the development outcome the project wishes to receive.
