This position reports directly to HKI’s Regional Food Fortification Program Manager (based in Dakar, Senegal), and will have a dotted line to HKI’s Global Communications department in the US. The Officer will also work closely with colleagues at all levels of the organization, particularly the Nutrition Director for Africa and the national food fortification program coordinators in Burkina Faso and Nigeria.
Outside HKI, the Officer will represent HKI to regional bodies, including the West African Health Organization (WAHO), Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA), and will work closely with partner agencies, government officials, and other private sector and civil society stakeholders.
HKI has a matrixed reporting structure that respects both the line management and authority within geographical hierarchies; and the accountability and oversight duties of subject matter experts and multi-country program managers wherever they are located. Regular communication and a spirit of teamwork among colleagues, both hierarchically and laterally, are essential to make this structure thrive.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to lead HKI’s regional advocacy, communications and social mobilization efforts in food fortification, particularly micronutrient fortification of bouillon in West Africa. S/he will work with staff of HKI and partner agencies to develop and implement a comprehensive strategy targeted at influencing officials of governments, private sector bouillon manufacturing industries, civil society and consumer associations, as well as other relevant stakeholders at national and regional levels to facilitate the development of regulatory standards for the manufacturing and micronutrient fortification of bouillon (i.e. condiments). This position will also provide trainings and guidance to HKI’s project teams, regarding responsible communication and knowledge management on HKI’s food fortification efforts in West Africa. The Officer will be responsible to ensure visibility to HKI’s regional food fortification work, particularly micronutrient fortification of bouillon.
The position will be based at the HKI Africa Regional Office in Dakar, Senegal, with work activities in Burkina Faso, Nigeria and Senegal, and travel to regional meetings, as needed.
