Summary:

Solidarity Center seeks a Policy Officer for a newly created position in an expanding Executive Office to assist in raising the profile of the issues facing workers in today’s global economy as well as the work of Solidarity Center and its allies. This individual will need to be conversant with ongoing political, economic, social, and trade union policy developments in the US and abroad.

Responsibilities include tracking policy developments, coordinating outreach, and drafting relevant, persuasive, and high quality policy products. All written material must be grammatically and factually correct, logical, and easy to understand. This person will be involved in supporting the planning and implementation of those programs that support Solidarity Center's global partners in build their own policy advocacy capacity. The Policy Officer will participate in developing and conducting education, training, and other programs. This individual should bring creative ideas and new approaches to policy advocacy.

This individual will write policy materials and coordinate logistics that will require handling multiple demands effectively with attention to detail. Some program-related overseas travel may be required. The Policy Officer will also prepare and exchange information with other departments and may be asked to attend meetings or conferences on behalf of Solidarity Center.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in political science, international relations, labor relations, or a related field and/or five years of related work experience;
  • Knowledge of international relations including trade unions and socio-economic and political developments in the U.S. and abroad. Previous coalition and/or trade union experience;
  • Ability to work independently and complete assignments accurately, on time, and with limited supervision;
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments simultaneously;
  • Ability to work and interact easily with a wide variety of people;
  • Good communication and writing skills;
  • Computer literacy for word processing, simple spreadsheets, and databases.

Fluency in a foreign language is a plus.

Specific Duties:

  • Conduct research and summarize the results of that research;
  • Maintain policy calendar to ensure timely preparation of policy materials;
  • Attend meetings and provide a summary of key points;
  • Maintain a database of contacts and Hill outreach;
  • Compile briefing books and white papers on policy priorities;
  • Work with other staff to develop policy advocacy materials;
  • Participate in coalition meetings and activities;
  • Draft/edit policy materials, reports, letters, and other correspondence;
  • Coordinate activities with the Center’s other program and functional offices; and
  • Maintain relationships with other organizations.
