Position Summary

The Communications Officer, Media, will be a key member of the External Communications team within the foundation’s Global Policy and Advocacy division. S/he will be based in Seattle and work closely with colleagues across the foundation’s global offices to help advance the external communications strategy and manage the foundation’s reputation through proactive and reactive engagement with media, partners, and foundation colleagues.

Core Responsibilities

  • Build relationships with media and track opportunities for engagement on the foundation’s priority issues;
  • Lead proactive media engagement around key campaigns and foundation leadership trips and events;
  • Handle day-to-day media requests, liaising with colleagues across the foundation to ensure we respond quickly and thoughtfully to inquiries;
  • Lead proactive responses to breaking news as appropriate, ensuring we inject foundation voice into conversations with relevance to the foundation’s priorities;
  • Liaise with foundation partners to ensure clear, compelling, consistent communications on our key issues;
  • Maintain a strong connection with the foundation’s regional communications teams;
  • Act as a thought partner to the program-specific communications team, the Executive and Employee Communications team, and other partners around the foundation on communications strategy and approach;
  • Collaborate across the External Communications team on social strategy and new media engagement;
  • Track key issues with implications for the foundation;
  • Develop communications plans and craft key messages, Q&As, press releases, fact sheets, and other media materials;
  • Participate in projects and special initiatives, drawing on resources across Communications to deliver on needs of assigned division(s) and the foundation as a whole;
  • Responsible for high-quality interactions and clear and consistent communications with grantees and partners in the field;
  • Experience with communications strategy development, including audience segmentation and targeting, partner engagement, understanding of brand parameters and nuance, media tracking and measurement;
  • Collaborate on and support the development of external communication activities for members of the foundation’s Executive Leadership Team;
  • Regularly liaise with the foundation's Measurement & Insights team to track and evaluate the impact of external media tactics.

Core Knowledge and Skills

You will be a sharp, effective, and media-savvy communications professional, with experience developing and implementing communications strategies, and working closely with media on behalf of large or complex organizations. S/he will be digitally-minded with experience with new media and social media strategy. S/he should have a strong sense of curiosity, excellent judgement, and willingness to collaborate across teams. Some global experience is preferred. Additional qualifications include:

  • A deep understanding of and interest in the changing media landscape, including print, broadcast, and digital media;
  • Ability to represent the foundation expertly when engaging with media;
  • Experience working with executives and guiding their external communications;
  • Understanding of the global health and development policy environment;
  • Interest in communications trends and knowledge of new channels and tools;
  • Understanding of how communications advances program and advocacy goals;
  • Ability to synthesize information and express complex concepts in a clear and compelling manner, including the ability to translate technical program language into engaging communications messages;
  • Curiosity and willingness to always be learning;
  • Preference for international experience and shown cultural competency;
  • Willingness to take on new challenges and situations;
  • Flexible, “roll up your sleeves” attitude;
  • Excellent judgement; seeks support and asks questions when confronted with an obstacle;
  • Extraordinary writing and editing skills;
  • Shown ability to deliver high-quality work in a fast-paced environment; ability to switch gears quickly from one project to the next;

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree with 5+ years of substantial experience;
  • Experience in communications, journalism, public policy, or a related field;
  • Reports to: Interim Deputy Director, External Communications.
